PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Dawson Area Youth Leadership program is designed to assist participants in developing leadership skills, expanding their network area, and expanding their awareness of the social, economic, and political challenges facing the Dawson area. Dawson Area Development believes that each participant has the potential to become a leader and valuable decision-maker in the future.

SCOPE:
- Develop leadership for the future of our community.
- Create awareness regarding the challenges for our area and assets that can be leveraged to
capitalize on opportunities.
- Foster community cooperation.
- Encourage interactive networking between individuals from different parts of the
Dawson Area.
- Promote community betterment.

We are currently searching for applicants for youth class #3 for the 2020-2021 program year. Individuals selected will participate in a welcome picnic and nine months of day sessions that will educate them on resources and assets available in our area to leverage in the future, develop a close network of individuals across the Dawson Area and develop leadership skills through speaker presentations and completing a class project together.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Enrollment as a junior or senior* in one of the following school districts: Cozad, Elwood, Eustis-Farnam, Gothenburg, Lexington, Overton, SEM or homeschooled in one of the same school district’s areas. Students selected must commit to 100% participation in the program including day sessions and class project. Please take into consideration if there is time available along with all of your other school and work commitments. Exceptions can be made and reviewed on a case-by-case basis Participants must have a desire to develop and utilize leadership skills, expand their network and become further involved in their community/area.

PLEASE TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION IF THERE IS TIME AVAILABLE ALONG WITH ALL OF YOUR OTHER SCHOOL AND WORK COMMITMENTS.

*Seniors being eligible is for the 2021-2022 class only. There was not a class in 2020-2021 due to covid-19 and this will give students who would have been eligible last year the option to apply this year. In future years, it will go back to juniors only.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
100% attendance of all-day sessions and participation in the class project is required. An evening welcome picnic will be held in late August. The sessions will be held during the day until approximately 3:00 p.m. during the months of September - May with graduation in June therefore, day sessions should not interfere with after school activities, with the exception of the State Government Day in April which will run longer due to travel to and from Lincoln.

Every effort will be made to avoid conflicts with other school functions. Your administrators, teachers, and coaches are aware of this program and your absence from school during these sessions will be allowed. It is the student's responsibility to make sure all assignments or tests for school are completed prior to the actual day session. Participation is a privilege, so attendance is your responsibility.

REFERENCES
Two letters of reference are REQUIRED for your application to be considered complete. Please have your references directly email their letter to dawsonareadirector@gmail.com. The subject line should read 2021 DAWSON AREA YOUTH LEADERSHIP (STUDENT'S NAME) REFERENCE LETTER. If they provide you a hard copy letter please scan it and send it to the email address previously listed. References are recommended from someone who knows you well, other than a parent or relative. Your high school principal, counselor, teacher, coach, scout leader, church leader, etc. often make good references.

Members of the Dawson Area Leadership Advisory Board and alumni will review applications in confidence. Any personal information that might identify the student is removed prior to the selection committee members' review.

Applicants being considered for the program will be asked to participate in a brief interview with the selection committee. Each program year, up to 12 individuals will be selected to participate in Dawson Area Youth Leadership program.

TUITION
Applying to Dawson Area Youth Leadership program is a competitive application process that includes this online application form and an in-person interview with the selection committee. If selected for the program tuition will be due prior to the first-day session. Tuition and fees for the program are $300. The students are responsible for finding a sponsor to cover $250 of the tuition. Dawson Area Leadership will assist by providing a list of previous sponsors and coaching the youth through the process.

Nominate a local youth for the 2021-2022 Dawson Area Youth Leadership class

Please note that youth do not need to be nominated to apply, however, all nominees will receive written notice of their nominations in efforts to encourage them to apply. Youth must be high school juniors or seniors* at Cozad, Elwood, Eustis-Farnam, Gothenburg, Lexington, Overton, SEM high schools or a home school in the Dawson Area in the upcoming 2021-2022 school year to participate.
