In February 2004, Dawson County commissioned The Wadley Donovan Group to Complete a Labor Market Assessment and Survey.

The following are direct quotes from the Executive Summary of the Report:

  • The area’s prevalent occupational skills include service-related, clerical and precision production skills. The industries with the largest concentration of workers include manufacturing, services, and retail trade.

  • Area labor costs are low relative to other parts of the country and companies offering competitive wages and benefit packages will benefit from a highly productive, dedicated workforce. As a result of incomes that are below national averages, residents not currently participating in the workforce are more likely to be interested in entering the workforce, provided the right opportunity was available.

  • New employers would also rely on Dawson County’s underemployed residents to fulfill labor requirements. 32% or 4,573 of employed residents feel they are qualified for better jobs than they currently hold (i.e., underemployed). 24.4% of these underemployed residents report having qualifications for management/administration-related positions.
